Documentation of Combinatietonen (2021)
In collaboration with Benjamin Schoones

The exhibition 'Combinatietonen' was the result of a workweek at IDFX in close collaboration with Benjamin Schoones. This resulted in a film, installation and performance which loosely were weaved together. An important element of ‘Combinatietonen’ was the inside garden, which was artificially built up the same way a painter would compose a painting. We gathered grasses, mosses and some other plants like ferns, along with soil and rocks to create the illusion of a cohesive fragment of a landscape.

Upon closer inspection, the attentive visitor would realise that the grasses could not form an ecosystem; shade plants were placed directly to
grasses which thrived in sunlight and non-native grasses, -which were bought instead of gathered-, were mixed in with the native grasses. The garden was a constructed, romanticized landscape without any regard towards ecosystemic principles. The garden was elevated to the height of hands, which further added to the illusion that the landscape is something to be managed.
